California Institute Price and Inflation Data
An Online Source for Information on California and Federal Policy

Updated Friday, December 26, 1997 12:11:22 PM

This data page contains inflation measures (CPI-U and CPI-W) from 1980 to the present for U.S., California, Los Angeles-Long Beach CMSA and the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose CMSA. The prices reflect the inflation rate during the prior 12 months. For example, the January 1996 figure reflects inflation for the period January 1995-January 1996. Please note that annual averages are also available. For example, the 1996 annual average reflects inflation measured from 1995-1996.

For specific commodity prices or for longer time series, contact
The Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The source for all of these data is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics except for state CPI, which is provided by the California Institute. (BLS does not estimate CPI cost-of-living figures for states. Many argue that BLS should provide state-level CPI figures to better understand the cost-of-living differences across the country.)

Please choose a price (inflation) measure. Choose index if you would like the raw BLS index numbers for a specified period. Note that 1982-1984=100 for this index. Choose % if you would like the previous year's inflation rate.
