 Special Report

Republican Steering Committee Makes Committee Assignments
The Republican Steering Committee announced most of its Committee assignments late Friday night.  The Democrats are not expected to make their assignments until December.  Minority Leader Richard Gephardt (MO) is still negotiating an increase in committee seats for Democrats because of the narrower split between the two parties for the 106th Congress.  If Democrat committee seats are increased, there may also be further changes in the Republican assignments.

The Committee assignments for the new California Republicans, as well as a few changes for incumbent Californians, are as follows:

Steve Kuykendall (Torrance) was appointed to the National Security Committee and the Science Committee.

Gary Miller (Ontario) will serve on the Committees on Budget, Science, and Transportation and Infrastructure.

Doug Ose (West Sacramento) will sit on Agriculture, Banking and Financial Services, and Government Reform and Oversight.

Rep. Jerry Lewis (Redlands) has been named the new Chairman of the Appropriations Committee's National Security Subcommittee

Rep. Ron Packard (Oceanside) was appointed Chair of the Energy and Water Subcommittee on Appropriations

Rep. John Doolittle (Rocklin) is giving up his seat on Agriculture and assuming a position on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Rep. George Radanovich (Fresno) has been appointed to the International Relations Committee.

Finally, as expected, Rep. David Dreier (Covina) has been named to Chair the Rules Committee.

To expand communications between Washington and California, the California Institute provides periodic faxed bulletins regarding current activity on Capitol Hill which directly impacts our state. Bulletins are published weekly during sessions of Congress, and occasionally during other periods. The e-mail edition is made possible in part by in kind donations from Sun Microsystems and QUALCOMM, Inc.
