.LLSPECIAL SPECIAL REPORT COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS FOR NEW CALIFORNIA MEMBERS ANNOUNCED
Committee assignments for California's five freshman Representatives
were decided late last week as both parties finished up their organizational meetings. Rep.-
elect James Rogan (R-Glendale) will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Carlos
Moorhead, and assume a position on the Commerce Committee. Rogan is one of only two
freshmen from both parties to be assigned to the Commerce Committee. Rep.-elect Loretta
Sanchez (D- Garden Grove), who on Friday was officially declared the winner of the 46th
Congressional District over 20 year incumbent Bob Dornan, has been assigned to the
Economic and Educational Opportunities Committee. Rep.-elect Brad Sherman (D-
Sherman Oaks), who's previous elected position was on the California State Board of
Equalization, was selected to sit on both the Budget Committee and the International Relations
Committee. Rep.-elect Walter Capps (D-Santa Barbara) was also selected to sit on the
International Relations Committee as well as the Science Committee. Rep.-elect Ellen
Tauscher (D-Pleasanton) was assigned to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
These freshmen, however, were not the only Californians with new committee
assignments. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-San Diego) will leave the Economic
and Educational Opportunities Committee and the National Security Committee to take the
seat on the Appropriations Committee being vacated by Rep. Frank Riggs (R-Windsor).
Riggs is leaving Appropriations to assume the Chair of the Early Childhood, Youth and
Families Subcommittee of the Education and Economic Opportunities Committee. In
addition, Riggs will join the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles) will leave both the Education and Economic
Opportunities Committee and the Judiciary Committee to take his new seat on the Ways and
means Committee (see Bulletin, Vol. 3, No. 40). Finally, Rep. Sonny Bono (R-Palm
Springs) was named to the National Security Committee and will leave the Banking
Committee; Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport) has been named to the Government
Reform and Oversight Committee; and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Marina Del Rey) will leave
the Science Committee.
